Victorious Australia Bringing Same Squad to Perth for 3rd Ashes Test
Australia will take the same 12-man squad to Perth for the third Ashes test this week after humbling England by 218 runs to win the second match in Adelaide on Monday.
Selector John Inverarity said in a statement that uncapped fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile and 12-test paceman Doug Bollinger would also be in Perth on standby and would train with the squad for the test match "should they be required."
Australia fielded the same team in Adelaide that thrashed England by 381 runs in Brisbane, the first time in a year that the team has been unchanged for consecutive tests.
Coach Darren Lehmann was reluctant to mess with a winning formula for the WACA, where their pacemen will hope to wreak maximum damage against a shell-shocked England side on a bouncy wicket.
"At the moment, all good," Lehmann said of his bowlers' fitness for the third match starting on Friday.
"(If they're) 100 percent, they'll play. If not, they won't.
"From our point of view, we've just got to keep what we're doing now. Not change too much. Just make sure we adapt to Perth conditions. As you've seen, we adapted very well from Brisbane to here, and now we go back the other way."
Australia lead the five-test series 2-0 and can wrest the Ashes away from holders England with victory in Perth.
Australia squad: Chris Rogers, David Warner, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke (captain), Steve Smith, George Bailey, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Ryan Harris, Nathan Lyon, James Faulkner.

Grease comes to Perth

Grease is the word in musical theatre land, with Australian producer John Frost announcing the popular show is heading to Perth and Adelaide.
The high-energy musical, which has already enjoyed successful seasons in Brisbane and Sydney and is soon to open in Melbourne, will head to South Australia and WA in winter next year.
Frost said he was delighted that Grease was continuing its tour of the country.
“Rarely have I seen audience reactions like the ones we have been receiving every night for Grease, with everyone in the aisles dancing and singing along,” he said in a statement.
“Grease truly is Australia’s number one party musical, and now I’m delighted to give audiences in Perth and Adelaide the chance to sing-a-long and dance with Rob, Gretel, Todd, Bert and the gang on stage.”
The musical is based on the 1978 film starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta and features all the songs, including You’re The One That I Want, Grease Is The Word, Summer Nights and Greased Lightnin’.
Leading the cast in the iconic roles of Danny and Sandy are Rob Mills and Gretel Scarlett.
The musical also stars Bert Newton as slick veteran disc jockey Vince Fontaine and Todd McKenney as Teen Angel.
Grease will begin at Perth’s Crown Theatre on June 21, 2014, followed by a season at the Festival Theatre in Adelaide from August 3, 2014.

Perth Predicted to be Bigger Than Brisbane
![]() |
| Join the crowd: Perth population tipped to hit three million. Picture: Lee Griffith/The West Australian |
Perth will overtake Brisbane to become Australia's third biggest city in 15 years, population projections reveal.
Three million people are expected to call Perth home by 2028, putting fresh pressure on the city's infrastructure and housing supply to keep pace with the growth.
The capital's swelling population will almost double WA's total population from 2.4 million people to 4.7 million by 2040.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the nation's population is growing faster than previously thought.
Five years ago it had projected Australia's population could get as high as 62.2 million by 2101 but it has revised that to 70 million.
It is based on the highest population growth scenario of women having two babies and annual migration of almost 280,000 a year. Using its mid-range growth assumptions, the ABS forecasts the population will double to 46 million by 2075.
Under the same medium scenario, Perth's current population of 1.9 million is tipped to rise to three million by 2028 and pass Brisbane.
What makes Perth's rapid population increase even more staggering is that it will overtake Brisbane in just 15 years, even though the Queensland metropolis will have the second fastest growth rate of any capital city in the country.
Curtin University professor of sustainability Peter Newman said Perth should be able to absorb an extra 1.1 million people if it got the infrastructure right.
“We will cope with it if we plan for it,” he said. “Melbourne and Sydney are exporting people to Brisbane and Perth, but we’re just getting more of them.”
He advocates future housing development in Perth to focus on 8-10 storey-high buildings in sub-centres based around new and existing train stations.
Professor Newman said Perth was poised to become a global city as it becomes the headquarters for energy and mining giants in the region, which would provide employment.
But it was also critical to attract jobs in the “knowledge economy” such as software developers and university researchers so the city was not just relying on the resources industry.
Urban Development Institute Association WA chief executive Debra Goostrey said industry and government were closely monitoring housing supply to prevent a repeat of last decade’s squeeze that drove up property prices.
While new land was being released, Ms Goostrey said there were emerging signs of some skilled labour shortages that could slow down construction.
She also said governments needed to keep up infrastructure investment to accommodate the swelling population.
“It definitely has it challenges but for people living in Perth this is a fantastic opportunity to build a very vibrant city that people want to come and live in,” Ms Goostrey said.

New A380 flights from Perth
![]() |
| New A380 flights from Perth |
Emirates the world’s largest international airline, is set to launch A380 super jumbo services to Perth from March 1.
According to Canberra sources the airline has slots approved for the 496-seat A380 to replace one of its tripe daily Boeing 777 services.
The A380 flight is scheduled to arrive at 5.25pm and depart at 10.30pm.
To see a virtual reality view of the A380 click here.
Emirates had planned to operate the A380 from Perth from mid year but delays in the installation and integration of the new aerobridge has put that back to March next year.
However, that A380 was allocated to Brisbane.
While the new service is slated from March 1 it may slip depending on A380 deliveries.
Emirates operates the world’s largest fleet of A380s with 39 in service and the airline had 51 on order.
But this week it ordered another 50 taking the total backlog for the airline to 101.
The Emirates A380 has 14 first class suites, 76 business class beds and a lounge bar on the upper deck and 406 economy class seats on the main deck.
At this week’s order announcement Emirates President Tim Clark said that the A380 “remains highly popular with our passengers.”
“It is still one of the most efficient aircraft to operate today in terms of fuel burn and emissions per passenger, and it gives us the flexibility in some cases to meet passenger demand in slot-constrained markets.”
One of the most popular features of the A380 is the quiet cabin and the plane is more stable than most in turbulence.
The Emirates A380s are mobile phone and email capable and have over 1500 entertainment options.
Emirates has been associated with Europe’s largest passenger aircraft since April 2000 when it was the first airline to announce plans to purchase the super jumbo.
The A380 is a major part of the airline’s ambitious expansion plans outlined by Mr Clark earlier this month.
“By 2020, we will have more than 250 aircraft serving some 70 million passengers across six continents. It will make us the largest airline on the planet by international passenger traffic,” Mr Clark said.
“However, being the biggest airline in the world is not really the end goal. Our aim has always been to connect travellers from around the world to Dubai, and other destinations with just a single stop via our hub.
“The strategic location of Dubai makes it possible for us to serve almost 90 per cent of the world’s population with non-stop flights.”
Over a third of the world’s population lives within a 4-hour flight from Dubai, and two-thirds are within an 8-hour flight.
Today, Emirates operates nearly 3,200 flights globally per week to 135 destinations in 76 countries.
The airline has 50,000 staff made up of 160 nationalities

James Blunt - Moon Landing 2014 World Tour
The Frontier Touring Company is delighted to announce the return of James Blunt to Australia in 2014., Blunt and his band will visit for a very special run of shows in May/June next year, with guests Busby Marou.
The timing for this exciting announcement could not be better, with Blunt's brand new single 'Bonfire Heart', taken from his upcoming album 'Moon Landing', peaking at #1 position on the iTunes single chart and debuting at #5 on this week's ARIA single chart!
James Blunt shot to fame in 2006 with the smash singles 'You're Beautiful' & 'Goodbye My Lover' from his platinum selling album 'Back to Bedlam', one of the UK's best-selling albums of the 2000's. For fourth studio album Moon Landing, Blunt wanted to go back to sounding... like himself. 'I was playing a lot of ukulele - mainly because it makes me look bigger,' says James. He also returned to producer Tom Rothrock, and to working with just the two of them in the studio, occasionally bringing in selected musicians from the Back To Bedlam sessions.
Picking up a guitar and writing his first song at 14, Blunt wrote his university dissertation on the music industry, took that guitar to the war in Kosovo, and always dreamed of making music, saying what success has meant, more than anything, is freedom. 'What it allowed me to do was go on tour with a band. That was absolutely amazing'.
But it also meant much more than that, with three world tours, four number one singles, five Grammy nods (plus two BRITS, two Ivor Novellos and a host of MTV awards), a six-piece band, seven whole years on the road, nearly 17m albums and 20 million singles sales worldwide following.
Bringing a full band with him for the tour and renowned for his charm and grace on stage, Australian audiences will surely be captivated when he returns for his first visit since 2011, playing songs from his highly anticipated new album as well as a collection of hits.
'There's just something romantic, old-school and lonely about the moon landings,' he explains. 'A nostalgic memory of something huge that we can hardly believe we once achieved, and for some sad reason, can't achieve again - like first love.'
"Goodbye My Lover was everything Sydney's jilted lovers could have dreamed of. His timorous demeanour whilst sitting at the piano worked rather well here, giving the hit song a raw touch and awarded him a well-deserved standing ovation."
- The Music Network 2011
It's an exciting week for Australian duo Busby Marou, with their new album 'Farewell Fitzroy' (out now through Warner Music) debuting at #5 on the ARIA album chart this week, they have also been confirmed as special guests for this Australian/New Zealand tour with James! Two years on from their acclaimed self-titled debut, Farewell Fitzroy is 12 tracks of folk-pop and country-tinged song craft, distinctly Australian storytelling, and the gifted musicianship of Tom Busby and Jeremy Marou.
"Marou's sometime-falsetto and Busby's earthy, clear lead vocals combine in heavenly harmony, and their guitars do likewise."

Perth Evolving to be Style Capital Says Josh Goot
PERTH is evolving into Australia's style capital, according to one of the country's hottest designers.
Internationally adored, Sydney-based designer Josh Goot said Perth had a growing fashion culture and a "captive consumer".
"There is a burgeoning domestic market in Perth, as well as tourist dollar that I'm sure is alluring established international brands," Goot, who flies into WA next week to open the new-season runway show for high-end fashion boutique Ricarda, said.
"Perth, like Sydney and Melbourne, has great relevance as an Australian style capital.
"It has a unique and Australian identity, plus great proximity to the rest of the world."
Goot's comment comes as Leederville one of the metropolitan area's emerging centres of cool prepares to hold its first fashion festival on Thursday night.

André Rieu to Tour Australia - The Waltz Tour Goes On
Violin master André Rieu, one of the best-selling live acts in the world, is delighted to announce he is returning to Australia with a brand new show in October 2013. Called "And The Waltz Goes On Tour", the tour is named after his successful album on which he collaborated with Sir Anthony Hopkins. Rieu will perform in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
Billboard ranked his 2011 tour as the 9th highest grossing tour of the year, just behind Lady Gaga. He has broken all classical concert records, packing stadiums and arenas with more than 700,000 adoring fans each year. Rieu has sold over 32 million albums globally and received 330 platinum awards for his albums. With his natural charisma, Rieu conducts his 60-piece Johann Strauss Orchestra and plays his 1732 Stradivarius violin to create a celebratory atmosphere.
"Every night when I play around the whole world, I see with my own eyes what the waltz does with the audience. People get out of their seats and waltz in the aisles spontaneously. They sing, they smile and for a moment they forget all their worries and are happy. That is why this tour is an ode to the waltz!" says André Rieu.
As always, the maestro and his orchestra will perform beautiful waltzes on this tour, but the concerts are much more than that. From famous Viennese operettas to film scores, spirituals to musicals, and from folk songs to marches; Rieu's concerts are a perfect mix of thrilling, romantic, festive and emotional melodies combined with surprises, balloons, beautiful soloists and of course Rieu's great sense of humor.
So far, 2012 has been a hugely successful year for the violinist. Rieu gave a record breaking series of 30 sold-out concerts in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He won a Classic BRIT award for his album "And The Waltz Goes On" and is nominated for a prestigious Mexican Luna award. With his first tour in Brazil Rieu reached the #1 position in Pollstar’s Box Office Chart of highest grossing tours in July. Leaving behind artist like Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, Radiohead, Coldplay, Celine Dion, The Black Keys and Pearl Jam.

PCB Welcomes Perth Hotel Expansion
Metro Hotel Perth will increase its room capacity by almost 50% as management looks to capitalise on ever increasing demand for Perth hotels.
Following a $3.5 million renovation to all 94 rooms in 2009, Metro Hotel Perth is embarking on a new project which will include major renovations to the lobby area, hotel, pool area and restaurant.
Forty-six new rooms will also be completed by the end of the year, bringing the property’s offering to 140 rooms.
Making the announcement yesterday, Metro Hospitality Group chief operating officer George Bedwani said the additional rooms were vital to address accommodation shortages in Perth, where occupancy currently stands at 85%.
“We believe the hotel industry in Perth will remain buoyant over the next five years as there continues to be capacity constraints due to few major hotel developments being built in Perth,” he said.
“This hotel is in high demand [and] we are now going the next step to ensure we benefit from the anticipated growth and demand over the next 4-5 years,” Bedwani added.
With the latest Deloitte Global Performance Review predicting that Perth occupancy will peak at 89% in 2014, Perth Convention Bureau chief executive Paul Beeson said the additional capacity comes as a fitting time for the MICE market.
“The effects on MICE will be positive, with an increase in room stock and by extension more competitive rates,” he told The Nibbler. “The WA government’s efforts to incentivise hotel development continue to stimulate additional room stock, and The Metro Hotel is a direct result of this.”
Construction will commence mid year and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2013. Management has promised the development will cause “minimal disruption” to guests.

Perth Zoo's Baby Echidnas Looking Sharp
![]() |
| THEY weighed less than a gram when they hatched, but Perth Zoo's two baby Echidnas are growing into their spikes. |
The baby short-beaked echidnas now tip the scales at more than a kilogram but they have plenty more growing to do and could reach up to seven kilograms, zoo keepers say.
Babbin and Nyingarn gained world attention late last year as the first young - or puggles - successfully bred from zoo-born echidnas. Their four-year-old mothers, Mila and Chindi, were also born at Perth Zoo.
The puggles spent their first two months in their mothers' pouches before nestling into their nursery burrows and are just starting to venture out to explore their surroundings.
The zoo has 15 echidnas, eight of them born at the facility.
Echidnas have no major predators in the wild due to their spines, but dingoes sometimes eat them.
Perth Zoo Australian fauna supervisor Belinda Turner said the zoo's successful echidna breeding program was helping experts learn more about echidna behaviour and breeding.
An international echidna workshop is currently being held at Perth Zoo to discuss their reproductive behaviour and increase their breeding success at other zoos.

Lloyd Webber's Superstar to be Resurrected
ANDREW Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's smash-hit musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, is returning to Australia for another arena tour in May, starring a comedian, a Spice Girl and a reality TV talent show winner in the lead roles.
In 1992, when the musical toured Australia's arenas for the first time (the show made its Australian premiere at Sydney's Capitol Theatre 20 years before, in 1972), John Farnham, then one of the country's biggest pop stars, starred as Christ, sporting a glorious blonde mane. Flanked by Kate Ceberano as a sultry Mary Magdalene and Noiseworks frontman, Jon Stevens, playing the treacherous Judas with a mullet to rival Jesus', the show became one of Australia's most popular ever, selling almost 1 million tickets over 16 weeks and grossing more than $40 million. The original cast recording soundtrack went platinum four times.
Twenty years later, after a record-breaking opening run in arenas across Britain and Ireland last September, a contemporarised version of the musical is returning to Australia and will debut in Perth on May 31. The three leads from the British production are reprising their roles here, with Perth-born comedian, singer and actor Tim Minchin playing Judas, former Spice Girl Mel C as Mary Magdalene and newcomer Ben Forster as Jesus, who won the role after appearing in Lloyd Webber's British TV talent show, Superstar.
Stevens returns to the cast for the Australian production, this time playing Pontius Pilate, while Andrew O'Keefe, host of TV game show Deal Or No Deal and nephew of '50s rock star Johnny O'Keefe, makes his major debut as King Herod.
The musical will travel to Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne in May and June. Three dates at Rod Laver Arena have been announced.
The story traces the last week of Jesus' life, beginning with his arrival with his disciples in Jerusalem and culminating in his crucifixion. In the updated version, the musical is set in the midst of a global financial crisis, inspired by the London riots and Occupy movements. The set is accordingly modernised, as are the costumes - Forster, as Jesus, evokes a brooding Johnny Depp, while Mel C's Mary Magdalene has dreadlocks and piercings. Reviews for the British leg have been largely positive, with both The Telegraph and The Times giving the show four stars. The Guardian was less impressed, describing Forster as having "only two facial expressions: (pained, or faintly smouldering, like a bit of damp kindling)".

More than 100 people will come to Australia from Britain for the show, which tour promoter Michael Gudinski hopes is the first in a series of collaborations with Lloyd Webber.

Australia Tops US ‘Dream Destination’ List
Is topping a list of ‘dream destinations’ a good thing? On the one hand, you’d appear as an idyllic destination, a place to which people would ideally love to travel. On the other hand, you’d appear as an idyllic destination, a place to which people couldn’t travel.
Regardless of its perception, or misperception, as a pipe-dream destination, the country’s position at the top of a list of dream vacation spots for clients of US travel agents would still bring a smile to the faces of Australian tourism authorities.
According to a survey conducted by North America’s largest travel agency franchisor – Travel Leaders Group – of its owners, managers and agents, Australia was chosen as the destination clients would most love to visit – if money were no object.
With agents allowed to choose up to three destinations each, Australia garnered 47 percent of votes, followed by Bora Bora (26 percent), world cruising (20 percent), Tahiti and Italy (17 percent each).
Other dream destinations of note included Antarctica (12th place), which earned 9.5 percent of votes, and the Galapagos Islands (13th place), which scored just over six percent of votes.

Perth Booms But WA Regions in Peril
Hotels in Perth and mining centres continue to thrive in Western Australia while the South West of the state remains in peril.
Latest figures show occupancy in Perth CBD and Geraldton at 86% and 83.4% respectively while in the South West more than half the rooms are empty with occupancy sitting at just 45.3%.
Occupancy across regional WA as a whole was 62%.
The figures, released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for the September quarter, further illustrates the gulf between mining and city centre areas and regional tourism centres.
Tourism Council WA said the government is relying on the mining boom and under investing in tourism.
"WA has the second lowest level of funding for tourism promotions of any state," chief executive Evan Hall said. "As a result hotels are booming in Perth and mining towns from business travel, while regional tourist towns are struggling.
"There's more to our economy than digging holes in the ground and it's time for the government to make tourism and events a state priority."
ABS figures show Broome occupancy at 79%, Exmouth 66%, Margaret River 54%, Esperance 51%, Derby, West Kimberley 46%, Busselton 44% and Augusta 28%.
Australian Hotels Association (AHA) WA chief executive Bradley Woods said measures are being taken to drive tourism.
"Initiatives by the State Government, including a new regional marketing campaign to generate tourism in regional Western Australia should result in a boost for those tourism regions who are currently doing it tough," he said.

How To... Keep Your Belongings Safe Whilst Travelling
When it comes to travelling, one of the most important tasks
is to keep yourself and your belongings safe.
It’s something that you need to be aware of at all times and
can make even the simplest trip stressful.
Here are a few tips on how to keep your cool, and your
wallet, on your next trip:
Low
- Keep cash and credit cards as well as photocopies of important documents in different places
- Wear all bags on the opposite shoulder to the one facing the road to decrease the chance of someone snatching the bag as they are driving
- Be aware of your surroundings – if it looks unsafe, leave
- Lock the doors and windows of your hotel room
Moderate
- For long trips ensure that you have a spare credit card that you can activate if your original gets lost or stolen
- Be careful about taking money out of ATMs, if possible do it near banks or hotels where security will be a little better, or buy everything on card
- Put locks on your handbags
- Close the blinds at your hotel so outsiders don’t know if you’re there or not
Extreme
- Take down serial numbers of all electronic goods that you are travelling with
- Stash credit cards inside your shoes
- Sew extra pockets on the inside of your pants
- Hide valuables around the hotel room i.e. under the bed
- Put something big, like a chair, or fragile, like glass, at your front door when you go to sleep so that you can hear if someone tries to break in. Be careful with this one if you are a sleepwalker and be aware that this may not be the safest option in the event of a fire
What not to do
- Don’t use waist or neck wallets, not only are they uncomfortable, but they also put a huge target on your belly
- Don’t put your wallet or passport in your pocket; they’re called ‘pick pockets’ for a reason!
- Don’t look too ‘expensive’ or ‘touristy’ when walking around foreign streets
- Don’t leave valuables lying around your hotel room, at the very least put them under some clothes
