Perth to Host Australia's Richest Golf Tournament

Eventscorp today launched its 2012 events calendar, featuring a record 84 events including Australia's richest golf tournament.

The US$2 million 'Perth International,' held in October next year at Lake Karrinyup Country Club, is expected to attract some of the world's best golfers.

The Perth International is a joint initiative of Eventscorp and International Management Group (IMG) to bring another major international golf event to Perth. IMG will be the owner and promoter of the tournament, which will be sanctioned by the European Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia. The European Tour is currently experiencing unprecedented success and boasts the top four ranked golf players in world.

The Perth International will be the only tournament in Australia to be sanctioned by the European Tour, and is expected to generate more than 1,000 hours of television coverage around the world, which is great exposure for Western Australia.

Australia Must Boost Tourism: Govt

Australia must do more to boost inbound tourism as the sector suffers from a strong local currency, increased competition from Asian destinations and less European visitors, the federal government says.

Speaking at an Australian Tourism Export Council conference Senator Nick Sherry said tourism operators needed to be more productive and innovative to halt the sector's decline.

"Australia's international market share has declined in recent years and domestic tourism expenditure has fallen since 2000," Mr Sherry told the conference on Wednesday.

"Not least of these challenges (is) increasing competition and the rise of the Australian dollar.

"We need to do something about this through investment in new products, boosting productivity, increasing uptake of digital technology and addressing labour and skills shortages."

He said there were no short term solutions to problems facing the industry, but said a surge in the number of tourists from Indonesia had been positive.

"Indonesian visitor growth alone was about 32 per cent in the last two years and by 2020 we expect the market value to more than double to $1.1 billion," he said.

DURAN DURAN TO TOUR AUSTRALIA IN MARCH 2012!

Dainty Group is thrilled to announce that after a long absence, one of the world’s most iconic bands, DURAN DURAN, will return to Australian shores in March 2012 for a series of concerts, in support of their latest album ‘All You Need Is Now’. This highly anticipated tour will see the band perform across the country, with shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and the Hunter Valley. Last in Australia in 2008, DURAN DURAN will showcase songs from their critically acclaimed new album on the March dates, alongside all of the unforgettable hits from across their thirty-year career.

TICKETS ON SALE THURSDAY 15TH DECEMBER

Go to www.duranduranmusic.com for exclusive pre-sale of tickets and VIP packages for Duran Duran VIP members DURAN DURAN’s stunning new album: ‘All You Need Is Now’, has already been proclaimed a triumph by fans and critics alike, and hit the #1 spot on download charts in the top 15 markets around the world when it was released earlier this year (on Shock Records in Australia). Produced by Grammy Award-winner Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse, Adele, Kaiser Chiefs, Lily Allen) and mixed by Spike Stent (Madonna, Björk, No Doubt), it features guest vocals/rap from long-time Duran Duran pal/collaborator Ana Matronic of
the Scissor Sisters, and R&B/neo-soul superstar Kelis; while Owen Pallett of Arcade Fire contributes the album’s string arrangements. ‘All You Need Is Now’ is a return-to-roots homage to DURAN DURAN’s most celebrated musical panache, and has already been dubbed the “imaginary follow up to Rio that never was.”

The announcement of the band’s 2012 Australian dates comes hot on the heels of their brilliantly reviewed North American tour, a sold out 11 show arena run in the UK, and a whirlwind year that has seen them, amongst other things, make a spectacular live film with director David Lynch, and most recently release a uniquely DURAN DURAN video for the song ‘Girl Panic !’. Directed by Grammy-award winner Jonas Åkerlund (who has shot videos for Madonna, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, including the notorious “Telephone”), this dazzling short film reunites top supermodels Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen, Eva Herzigova and Yasmin Le Bon, and was shot over the course of two days this past June at the Savoy Hotel in London. As the models take on rock star roles playing Simon, John, Nick, and Roger, the nine minute video unfolds into a stunning, fast-paced, high fashion affair, that has fast become the most talked about collaboration of its kind this year. Australian fans can view the video here.

The original Duran line-up of Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, and Nick Rhodes continues to reign supreme as one of the biggest British bands of all time - reimagining pop music, creating ground-breaking music videos and winning over millions of new fans worldwide with their unique fusion of music, art, technology and fashion. From the very beginning, when DURAN DURAN first took the visual imperatives of the New Romantic movement of the 1980s to a whole other level, defining the MTV generation, they have built a loyal army of fans who have stayed with them to this day.

As this new chapter begins, they have nothing left to prove, but everything to play for. So for them and their loyal army of fans… All You Need Is Now!

Anzac Project in WA to Receive $1.3m

The Federal Government will make its first major financial commitment to the Centenary of Anzac Project in Albany, Western Australia, today, with $1.3 million allocated for the first stage of work on an Anzac Interpretive Centre.

Albany was the last piece of Australia diggers saw as they sailed for Egypt to train before landing at Gallipoli and France.

Large convoys of ships used to assemble in King George Sound for mutual protection against German raiders such as the Emden.

The latest grant follows $250,000 for a scoping study earlier this year. Veterans Affairs Minister Warren Snowdon said the Albany centre had been a key recommendation of the National Commission on the Commemoration of the Anzac Centenary. Work on the project had to begin almost immediately if it was to be ready for the centenary in just over two years time.

The Anzac Centenary Project, headed by Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, is shaping up as Australia's largest commemorative program since the Centenary of Federation.

Australian Open Tennis: Tennis stars coming to Perth for Hopman Cup

West Australian tennis fans are in for a star studded treat at this summer’s Hyundai Hopman Cup XXIV with one of the best fields ever assembled in the tournament’s 24-year history.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said it was great to see Caroline Wozniacki, who’s held the number one ranking for the past year, coming to Perth for the first time.

“Caroline Wozniacki has won 18 WTA events and will be a major drawcard - she’ll become the 24th world number one player to play in the event since it started in 1988,” Dr Hames said.

“To have three of the top seven ranked women players in the world and two of the top 10 men coming to Perth this summer is fantastic.

“There are three Grand Slam event winners in Petra Kvitova, Li Na and Lleyton Hewitt in the field as well as some of the rising stars of tennis, which will guarantee some thrilling and entertaining games.”

The Minister said the State Government, through Eventscorp, is a founding sponsor of the Hopman Cup, and last year put in place a new four-year sponsorship agreement that carries through to 2014.

“The last Hyundai Hopman Cup broke attendance and television coverage records, and with the star studded field assembled for Hopman Cup XXIV those records will again be under threat,” Dr Hames said.

“This Hopman Cup will signal the end of an era with the tournament moving to Perth Arena next year and I want to publicly thank Burswood for being such wonderful hosts since 1988.”

Royals Visit Australia: Perth to serve 120,000 Snags at Queen's 'Largest-Ever' Barbecue

About 120,000 sausages and 1500 litres of tomato sauce will be served at the Queen's Big Aussie Barbecue in Perth later this month.

Tens of thousands of West Australians are expected to crowd Perth Foreshore to share a snag with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip on October 29, in what Premier Colin Barnett said would be an internationally historic event.

The royal couple will travel in a slow motorcade before stepping out to "mingle" with families, albeit behind a roped off path.

At least $250,000 is expected to be raised from gold coin donations for the sausage sizzle.

The money will be donated to the Australian Red Cross, Legacy, Clontarf Academy and Activ Foundation.

The Queen will be in Perth to open the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which runs October 28 to 30.

Perth Tourism News: Perth Airport Opens New Waiting Area

A new waiting area has opened at Perth Domestic Airport in response to escalating complaints about thousands of illegally parked cars causing havoc.

Drivers will now be able to wait with their cars for up to 90 minutes for the cost of a gold coin donation, which will be donated to a children's charity.

Perth Airport chief executive officer Brad Geatches said it was hoped the new park-and-wait area would stop the 63,000 drivers who illegally park along Brearley Avenue each year.

The number of people flying into and out of Perth Domestic Airport is growing at the highest rate of any Australian capital city - by almost 10 per cent last financial year.

The number of vehicles picking up and dropping off passengers is now about 900,000 each year, according to the airport.

WA's Multi-Billion-Dollar Windfall to Come at a Costt

Western Australia stands to gain billions of dollars in extra revenue - the most of any state in the country - under a free trade agreement being negotiated this week between Australia and India, economists predict.

But analysts warn that while overall the deal would particularly benefit WA, some jobs would be at risk if there was greater competition from Indian imports and cheaper labour.

Bilateral negotiations will begin in Canberra this week to nut out a comprehensive agreement that could include services, agriculture, resources and energy, and - according to the Centre for International Economics - add more than $40 billion to the economic output of each country by 2030.

University of Western Australia economist Michael Dockery said WA would likely be the biggest winner in a trade agreement with the rapidly developing country.

"If the resources boom keeps going the way it is, I would certainly think WA would be the main beneficiary," he said.

"[In] both India and China ... for years to come the growth is going to be phenomenal.

"We don't have a significant manufacturing base so ... some other states would experience the negative effects more than we would, so we ought to get more of the upside."

Premier Colin Barnett said there had already been a surge of business between WA and India and a free trade agreement would strengthen the economic relationship even further.

"India is rapidly becoming involved with the WA economy through LNG [liquefied natural gas] purchases, the Perdaman Urea project in Collie, and Lanco's purchase of Griffin Coal adding to the Birla Group's Nifty copper mine investment," he said.

"Western Australia's exports to India were valued at $7.2 billion in 2010 and India is Western Australia's fourth largest trading partner."

Mr Barnett called for the agreement to include agriculture, which would increase trade because the harvest seasons were complementary.

However, India is reportedly unlikely to give many concessions on agriculture, in particular rice and wheat, which are heavily protected.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry Western Australia international trade services manager Keith Seed also said reducing or removing tariffs on agriculture, including wine, would be a windfall for WA.

He warned some businesses, particularly in manufacturing industries, would cry foul over a free trade agreement but overall it would boost the state.

"A lot of people think there might be down sides with free trade, I don't think so," he said. "It opens up trade and communication between the countries.

Plenty of Whales But no Tourists - WA Tourism News

There have been many whale sightings in Albany in the first month of the season, but not many tourists to see them.

Albany Whale Tours operator John Woodbury claims tourist numbers are about 20 per cent down on last year, but those who have come for a glimpse of the world’s largest mammals have been thrilled to see humpbacks, orcas and two blue whales.

Albany Ocean Adventures skipper Paul Guest, who has taken a few stunning snaps of breaching whales this winter, said he had seen as many as 20 whales on a trip.

“Humpbacks are travelling through at the moment, we’ve had a few southern rights http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifcome into King George Sound, but it was probably a pregnant cow looking for somewhere quiet to have a baby,” he said.

Mr Guest said trips to spot the whales were cancelled last week because of bad weather but he hopes tourist numbers will pick up in the school holidays.

Mr Woodbury said most of the humpback sightings had been near Michealmas and Breaksea islands.

Perth Tourism News and Information: Tourism WA to Triple Chinese Visitation

Perth Tourism News and Information: Tourism WA to Triple Chinese Visitation

WA's Business Tourism Boom from China

NEW research shows foreign business visitors to WA increased more than 20 per cent in the year to March, with China forecast to drive international tourism.
International overnight visitor results from Tourism Research Australia’s latest International Visitor Survey, released today, showed an overall increase of 2.6 per cent to 706,600 visitors to WA in the 12 months to March.

The rise in the March quarter alone was 9 per cent.

According to the survey, the number of business visitors to WA in the year ending March 2011 rose by 23.3 per cent, with holiday visits up by 2.3 per cent and visits for the purpose of education increasing 2.5 per cent.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said WA’s buoyant resource and corporate sector was quite clearly luring more and more people to the state.

“Business visitors currently make up 16.4 per cent of all international visitors, up from 13.6 per cent in the year ending December 2010,” Dr Hames said.

More than 33,000 business travellers visited WA from overseas in the December 2010 quarter, up 42 per cent on the December quarter 2009.

Federal Minister for Tourism Martin Ferguson previously said business travellers presented an enormous opportunity for Western Australia’s tourism industry.

“Markets such as China are growing very strongly, with Western Australia’s national share of the Chinese market increasing by 109 per cent in 2010 compared with the previous year,” Mr Ferguson said.

Dr Hames said Tourism WA was developing strategies to increase the contribution of business travel to WA’s visitor economy.

“These include building the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) sector; positioning WA as a holiday destination to business visitors by encouraging them to extend their visit or to come back to holiday with their families; and creating events and experiences alongside conventions and conferences,” Dr Hames added.

In terms of international markets the most significant growth in visitors came from China with 15,200 arriving in WA (up a whopping 36 per cent), followed by Indonesia with 28,900 visitors (growing by an impressive 27.5 per cent) and then the USA with 45,400 (up 19.9 per cent).

“In the March quarter for 2011 visitors from the USA rose by a very healthy 53 per cent, and some of that growth will undoubtedly be a result of the WA promotion on The Oprah Winfrey Show in November 2010 and the extensive marketing Tourism WA has conducted in the US in conjunction with Oprah’s Great Australian Adventure,” Dr Hames said.

“China continues to show enormous potential, which we hope to tap into even further once direct flights to Perth are established and Tourism WA launches its new China marketing strategy.”

As reported previously by PerthNow, Asia’s biggest airline, China Southern Airlines signed a co-operative agreement last month which will give WA direct access to the world’s biggest tourism market for the first time, widely expected by industry to launch before November.

It's understood that representatives from Tourism WA are currently in China conducting meetings with China Southern Airlines officials and other tourism firms amid wide-ranging trade and consumer marketing efforts to ensure WA is top of mind in China.

The survey estimated 15,000 Chinese visitors came to WA in the 12 months to March, up from the 12,000 estimated to have headed to the state in 2010, which was an increase of 32.1 per cent from 2009.

They spent $80 million in WA in 2010, an increase of 135.3 per cent from $34 million spent in 2009.

However Tourism Council WA chief executive Evan Hall said today’s results were just the tip of the iceberg.

“With China Southern Airlines starting direct flights to Perth by November, we expect Chinese visitors to double over the next year,” he said.

But Mr Hall again questioned if WA was ready for an influx of Chinese tourists - a perennial issue for the industry with key tourism players often raising concerns about the lack of on-the-ground support for the burgeoning market, such as the level of Chinese speaking tourism sector employees or translated tourism guides available in Perth.

“If they don’t have a good experience they will stop coming,” Mr Hall said.

“We need a whole-of-government approach to get Western Australian tourism “China Ready”.”

TCWA also warned that not all regions were benefiting from international visitors.

“Hotels in Perth and mining regions are full of international business travellers, but holiday destinations are not seeing as much of the international visitor dollar” Mr Hall said.

“We must improve air, bus and passenger transport from Perth to holiday destinations to help get international visitors out into the regions.”

According to the national Tourism Forecasting Council’s first issue for 2011, released at the end of last week, Asia is expected to continue to lead the growth in inbound arrivals to Australia in the short and longer terms, reflecting the stronger economic performance of the region.

“For 2011, there has been an upward revision for arrivals from China (from 21.9 per cent to 25.8 per cent) and Indonesia (from 6.8 per cent to 13.1 per cent), as aviation capacity continues to increase,” the Forecast said.

“The outlook for international travel to Australia looks more optimistic for 2012 than is the case this year.

"The majority of growth in total tourism consumption is expected to come from stronger international visitation."

Japan is one exception to the mainly strong growth expected from Asia this year in the wake of the recent natural disaster, with visitor arrivals substantially downgraded to 293,000 in 2011.

Meanwhile, in Singapore today, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said the global airline industry is expected to post a post-tax profit of $US4 billion ($A3.73 billion) in calendar 2011, less than half its previous forecast of $US8.6 billion ($A8.01 billion) in March.

The IATA said this was because of the effect of political unrest, natural disasters and high fuel prices.

China Southern Airlines Agreement Special Announcement - Perth Flights

Signing the agreement: (L-R) Tourism WA CEO Stephanie Buckland, Tourism Minister Dr Kim Hames
and Executive Vice President Commercial for China Southern Airlines Mr He Zong Kai.

China Southern Airlines agreement brings direct flights between Perth to China a step closer.

Perth is set to join Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane as part of China Southern Airline's Australian network following the signing of a strategic cooperative agreement between the airline and Tourism WA last Friday.

The agreement was formally sealed at a ceremony in Guangzhou attended by Tourism Minister Dr Kim Hames, Tourism WA CEO Stephanie Buckland, Westralia Airports Corporation CEO Brad Geatches, China Southern Airlines' President and CEO Tan Wan Geng, and other senior airline executives.

Ms Buckland said the agreement was a significant breakthrough in the quest to establish direct flights between Perth and the massive Chinese market.

"Gaining direct access to China has been a top priority for Tourism WA," Ms Buckland said.

"Negotiations will now continue to finalise a marketing plan, flight schedules and a start date for a new service.

"There is much work to be done to stimulate market interest in China, and to help WA tourism operators prepare for the expected influx of Chinese visitors and to cater for their needs."

Tourism WA has developed a four-pronged marketing strategy to support direct aviation access to China.

Consumer Marketing - promote Western Australia directly to consumers in key Chinese cities through PR, digital marketing and in flight advertising - focusing in on the extraordinary experiences that appeal to Chinese travellers.
Trade Marketing - working closely with Chinese outbound travel agents to educate them about WA, help them to develop itineraries and conduct cooperative marketing campaigns.

WA Trade - working with WA tourism operators to ensure that Chinese visitors have a good experience in WA and also helping the WA trade to connect with the Chinese outbound agents.

Strategic Partnerships - create partnerships with government and private sector organisations to promote travel between China and Perth for all purposes (e.g. business travel, education, business events).

China Southern Airlines is not only China's largest airline, but the biggest in Asia. It has hubs in Guangzhou and Beijing. Using a fleet of more than 400 Airbus, Boeing and Embraer aircraft, China Southern operates an extensive domestic network within China, as well as international services to the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe, North America and Australia.

Many of China Southern's pilots are already familiar with West Australian skies following the establishment of the airline's Flying College here in 1993, with campuses at Jandakot and Merredin.

Western Australia has very strong trade links with China, with the State contributing around 70 per cent of Australia's exports to China.

As a result Perth is already a high-yield route from China, with 33 per cent of passengers travelling for business or employment.

In 2010, 12,000 Chinese visitors came to WA, an increase of 32.1 per cent on 2009. But currently WA only attracts about three per cent of Chinese visitors to Australia, and Tourism WA wants to significantly increase our share of the Chinese market.

"The introduction of direct access will obviously help to rectify that imbalance," Ms Buckland said.

Qantas' Perth-Japan Flight Cuts Hit Tourism

THE State's key tourism bodies, and many Perth Now readers, have been left disappointed by Qantas' decision to cut direct flights between Perth and Japan.
Earlier today Qantas announced that services between Perth and Narita in Japan will be suspended, and up to four weekly Jetstar services from Australia to Japan will be cut among a raft of other changes.

The carrier hopes these cuts will counter high oil and jet fuel prices and the impact of significant natural disasters in Japan, New Zealand and Australia, which have cost the company approximately $140 million.

Despite Qantas’ commercial rationale, Tourism WA CEO Stephanie Buckland said she was disappointed at the airline’s decision to suspend direct flights between Perth and Tokyo especially because the important market for WA seemed to be on the grow.

Ms Buckland said that despite visitor numbers from Japan declining in recent years, the trend apparently reversed in 2010 with the International Visitor Survey (IVS) figures showing a 14.9 per cent increase compared with 2009.

“Before the recent earthquake and tsunami we were optimistic that growth would continue,” Ms Buckland said.

She said TWA will maintain an open dialogue with Qantas about the potential for resumption of direct flights to Tokyo when conditions improve.

“There remain several carriers including Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Malaysian Airlines, Thai Airways, Air Asia and Jetstar which offer non-direct flights between Perth and Japan, and Tourism WA will work closely with those airlines and the WA tourism industry to encourage continued visitation to Western Australia,” she added.

Tourism Council WA president Paul King said the move from Qantas was yet another blow for local operators who have been doing it tough for some time in Western Australia.

“Japan is a significant industry partner of Western Australia, and like the Premier said on radio today, Qantas’ decision sends the broader Japanese community the wrong message, at a time when they are dealing with the devastation of recent events” Mr King said.

Mr King hoped the decision was only a temporary measure amid calling on Qantas to reconsider its decision in the future with a view to reinstate these very important airline routes.

Mr. King also highlighted the need for the state tourism industry to get behind and support the WA Tourism Minister’s push to attract direct services from other Asian destinations such as China and India now or miss out to the eastern states who were aggressively seeking this Asian inbound tourism business.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said the other measures included reductions in domestic and international capacity, retirement of aircraft, reduction of management positions and ongoing fuel surcharges.

Last week the airline announced that domestic fares will rise up to $10 a flight from the end of the month, on top of the five per cent hike in February.

Population Demands on Area - Albany, WA

ALBANY needs to be well prepared for its population to more than double in the next 40 years.

This was the message delivered by Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls last Friday at a GSDC-ACCI business breakfast.

Mr Grylls spoke about the Government’s “Supertown” concept and how projected growth would affect the Great Southern.

“It’s all about planning for WA’s population growth which is expected to be up by 2 million by 2050,” he said.

“If the same dispersal figures are maintained, that means 500,000 extra people in regional WA.

“If that happens, every regional town doubles in population.”

Mr Grylls said it was vital to plan for population growth in order to maximise opportunities.

“If you’re not planning now, you’re ignoring the statistics already in place,” he said.

“If we don’t plan for regional population growth, the people stay in Perth.

“We have a unique opportunity to plan for that growth.

“The growth of areas like Albany will be above that natural trend line because of the amenities and facilities you’ve already got.

“Given your beautiful natural amenity that you have here, you are poised for greater-than-average growth in the future.”

Mr Grylls cited examples of poor planning in centres such as Port Hedland and Karratha being fixed at great expense.

“We don’t want to make mistakes which we have to fix up in the future,” he said.

“If you don’t plan, you’ve got 2 million extra people in Perth, and Perth doesn’t want that either.

“Having the planning tools in place that tells me where a doubling of Albany’s population is going in terms of the topography of Albany, where the need is for the next hub of commercial and retail, where the next playgrounds need to be is absolutely vital.

“Whether that document is needed in five years time or 15 years time, it doesn’t actually change because the baseline factors of your growth, like topography, already exist.”

Mr Grylls said the Albany community needed to be prepared for change if economic drivers like Grange Resources’ proposed magnetite mine came to fruition.

Albany will play host to a Planning Institute of Australia Regional Forum at the AEC on Monday, March 28.

Whale World celebrates 30 years

Albany's Whale World celebrated its 30th anniversary in January.

The popular Albany tourist attraction first opened in 1980 and has now grown into a unique part of the many things to see and do in the town.

“Whale World is very popular with tourists,” according to Mr Alan Scicluna, Manager of Metro Inn Albany. “At least 80 per cent of all first time visitors to Albany who stay in our Motel will make a visit to Whale World and come back raving about it,” he said.

There is over 25 exhibits on offer at Whale World, including Australia's last whalechaser, the Cheynes IV; three whale oil storage tanks which have been transformed into movie theatres and multimedia exhibits, and a very popular theatre tank which shows the world's first 3D whale movie. “One of it’s biggest advantages is that appeals to people of all ages and has something for everyone to see and do,” said Mr Scicluna.

For more information on Whale World visit the website or contact Zoe Upson on (08) 9844 4021.

Perth gets all revved up over V8 Supercars

V8 Supercars Australia has announced the strongest support program ever seen at Barbagallo Raceway for the return of the WA round in April. The Trading Post Perth Challenge will feature five national support categories, including the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series, Superbikes, Porsche Carrera Cup, the V8 Utes and the Touring Car Masters.

WA’s Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron announced that tickets were now on sale for the highly anticipated return of the Perth round of one of the world’s most popular motorsport events, the V8 Supercars Championship.

“The West Australian State Government is pleased to see the return of the V8 Supercars Championship, now known as the Trading Post Perth Challenge, to WA for the next five years,” Mr Waldron said.

In support of the event, the State Government has committed more than $15 million towards the event and the upgrading of Barbagallo Raceway to ensure the venue is suitable to host the event from April 29 to May 1 this year and beyond.

In 2011, the Trading Post Perth Challenge will feature five national support categories. This makes it one of the strongest event programs on the V8 Supercars season calendar and the most events ever featured at the Perth round.

These categories include:

• Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series: The 2011 Fujitsu Series will consist of a seven-round series and feature big name drivers. It will make its first-ever trip west to Barbagallo Raceway this year

• Australian Superbike Championships: Capable of top speeds of more than 320km/h, the bikes are modified beyond stock showroom specifications, transforming into true racing machines. Big names in action will include Wayne Maxwell, Jamie Stauffer, Troy Herfoss and Glenn Allerton. A host of motorcycle manufacturers will take to the track, including Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, BMW, Ducati and Aprilia

• Porsche Carrera Cup Australia: Porsche Carrera Cup Australia returns to race tracks around Australia in 2011 after a two-year absence. Carrera Cup is the fastest, one-make sports car series in the world with drivers racing identical, 450 horsepower, purpose-built 911 race cars

• Yokohama V8 Ute Racing Series: The V8 Utes are sure to entertain with 32 cars (16 Fords and 16 Holdens) and a star-studded line-up including three local drivers, the McNally brothers (Rhys and Jake), reigning champion Grant Johnson and V8 Supercar driver Cameron McConville

• Touring Car Masters presented by Autobarn: The masters showcase a selection of immaculate touring cars of the pre-1977 era, and boasts some of the sport's most famous ‘muscle’ cars. The series features legends such as seven-time Bathurst winner and four-time Australian Touring Car Champion, Jim Richards; two-time Bathurst winner and former Australian Touring Car Champion, John Bowe; and four-time Australian Truck Racing Champion, Bob Middleton.

It is anticipated that more than 70,000 local, interstate and international visitors were expected to attend the Trading Post Perth Challenge.

Tourism WA, through Eventscorp, will be working closely with V8 Supercars to help promote the event locally, nationally and internationally. The Seven Network will also be broadcasting the event to millions around the nation and overseas.

Masters of cycling head to Western Australia for first leg of world tour

Perth has been named as the host city for the first ever World Cycling Tour qualifying event.

The recent announcement by international cycling body, Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), will be a fantastic addition to Western Australia’s events calendar.

The tour is a series of up to 15 UCI-sanctioned races that will be held all over the world with the top 10 per cent in each age group receiving the right to race in the final for the coveted rainbow jersey.

This is very exciting news for WA, as Perth is the only city in Australia with exclusive rights to host this event for at least the next three years.

It is proposed that the UWCT in Perth will comprise nine categories, both male and female, commencing at the age of 30 and rising in five year brackets up to 65, with a Challenger Class for 16-29 year olds. The proposed course will feature 10 laps over a 14-kilometre circuit around Perth.

Mr Andrea Marcellini Mendonça from UCI said the organisation was delighted to have Perth as the opening event of the UCI World Cycling Tour. “Perth’s bid to host the event was very professional, showing the city’s infrastructure and tourist attractions which are perfect to receive international visitors,” Mr Marcellini Mendonça said.

The UCI World Cycling Tour will start in Perth on April 16, 2011.

Festivals Offer Free Fare for the Frugal - Perth Events

Festivals are a highlight of summer but penny-pinching after the global financial crisis has forced organisers to offer more free events.
The general manager of the Perth International Arts Festival, which begins in February, Julian Donaldson, says free events draw crowds to the city and are a boost to the local economy.

"We have always had a pretty big commitment to free events in our program. Our festival needs to have
a broad community benefit and we do that by making it accessible with free events," Donaldson says.

The festival's complimentary events, funded by Lotterywest and sponsors, are used as a magnet to draw attention to ticketed events.

The Perth International Arts festival has a budget of $14 million and Donaldson expects 220,000 people to attend ticketed events this year, and 600,000 visitors overall.

Despite good economic growth and low unemployment, Australian consumers have been reluctant to splurge, even on Christmas.
The Perth festival mostly draws punters from Western Australia but Donaldson hopes to attract more interstate and international visitors in the coming years through a partnership with Tourism WA.

"It could be a motivation to com or an added-value event when they get here ... but it could be the difference in deciding whether to come west or not," Donaldson says.
