Whale World celebrates 30 years
Albany's Whale World celebrated its 30th anniversary in January.
The popular Albany tourist attraction first opened in 1980 and has now grown into a unique part of the many things to see and do in the town.
“Whale World is very popular with tourists,” according to Mr Alan Scicluna, Manager of Metro Inn Albany. “At least 80 per cent of all first time visitors to Albany who stay in our Motel will make a visit to Whale World and come back raving about it,” he said.
There is over 25 exhibits on offer at Whale World, including Australia's last whalechaser, the Cheynes IV; three whale oil storage tanks which have been transformed into movie theatres and multimedia exhibits, and a very popular theatre tank which shows the world's first 3D whale movie. “One of it’s biggest advantages is that appeals to people of all ages and has something for everyone to see and do,” said Mr Scicluna.

Perth gets all revved up over V8 Supercars
V8 Supercars Australia has announced the strongest support program ever seen at Barbagallo Raceway for the return of the WA round in April. The Trading Post Perth Challenge will feature five national support categories, including the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series, Superbikes, Porsche Carrera Cup, the V8 Utes and the Touring Car Masters.
WA’s Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron announced that tickets were now on sale for the highly anticipated return of the Perth round of one of the world’s most popular motorsport events, the V8 Supercars Championship.
“The West Australian State Government is pleased to see the return of the V8 Supercars Championship, now known as the Trading Post Perth Challenge, to WA for the next five years,” Mr Waldron said.
In support of the event, the State Government has committed more than $15 million towards the event and the upgrading of Barbagallo Raceway to ensure the venue is suitable to host the event from April 29 to May 1 this year and beyond.
In 2011, the Trading Post Perth Challenge will feature five national support categories. This makes it one of the strongest event programs on the V8 Supercars season calendar and the most events ever featured at the Perth round.
These categories include:
• Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series: The 2011 Fujitsu Series will consist of a seven-round series and feature big name drivers. It will make its first-ever trip west to Barbagallo Raceway this year
• Australian Superbike Championships: Capable of top speeds of more than 320km/h, the bikes are modified beyond stock showroom specifications, transforming into true racing machines. Big names in action will include Wayne Maxwell, Jamie Stauffer, Troy Herfoss and Glenn Allerton. A host of motorcycle manufacturers will take to the track, including Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, BMW, Ducati and Aprilia
• Porsche Carrera Cup Australia: Porsche Carrera Cup Australia returns to race tracks around Australia in 2011 after a two-year absence. Carrera Cup is the fastest, one-make sports car series in the world with drivers racing identical, 450 horsepower, purpose-built 911 race cars
• Yokohama V8 Ute Racing Series: The V8 Utes are sure to entertain with 32 cars (16 Fords and 16 Holdens) and a star-studded line-up including three local drivers, the McNally brothers (Rhys and Jake), reigning champion Grant Johnson and V8 Supercar driver Cameron McConville
• Touring Car Masters presented by Autobarn: The masters showcase a selection of immaculate touring cars of the pre-1977 era, and boasts some of the sport's most famous ‘muscle’ cars. The series features legends such as seven-time Bathurst winner and four-time Australian Touring Car Champion, Jim Richards; two-time Bathurst winner and former Australian Touring Car Champion, John Bowe; and four-time Australian Truck Racing Champion, Bob Middleton.
It is anticipated that more than 70,000 local, interstate and international visitors were expected to attend the Trading Post Perth Challenge.
Tourism WA, through Eventscorp, will be working closely with V8 Supercars to help promote the event locally, nationally and internationally. The Seven Network will also be broadcasting the event to millions around the nation and overseas.
Masters of cycling head to Western Australia for first leg of world tour
Perth has been named as the host city for the first ever World Cycling Tour qualifying event.
The recent announcement by international cycling body, Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), will be a fantastic addition to Western Australia’s events calendar.
The tour is a series of up to 15 UCI-sanctioned races that will be held all over the world with the top 10 per cent in each age group receiving the right to race in the final for the coveted rainbow jersey.
This is very exciting news for WA, as Perth is the only city in Australia with exclusive rights to host this event for at least the next three years.
It is proposed that the UWCT in Perth will comprise nine categories, both male and female, commencing at the age of 30 and rising in five year brackets up to 65, with a Challenger Class for 16-29 year olds. The proposed course will feature 10 laps over a 14-kilometre circuit around Perth.
Mr Andrea Marcellini Mendonça from UCI said the organisation was delighted to have Perth as the opening event of the UCI World Cycling Tour. “Perth’s bid to host the event was very professional, showing the city’s infrastructure and tourist attractions which are perfect to receive international visitors,” Mr Marcellini Mendonça said.
The UCI World Cycling Tour will start in Perth on April 16, 2011.
