Plans progress for 2010 games (Albany WA)

HUNDREDS of athletes from all around the state are expected to converge on Albany to contest the 2010 WA State Masters Games.

The games will be held from April 17 to 26 with participants expected to compete in 12 different sports including athletics, chess, croquet, golf, harness racing, netball, rowing, shooting, swimming and tennis.

Archery could be taking part with an indoor event on the drawing board.

Masters Games chair Barb Wilson said major sponsors had been secured, with the City of Albany, Albany Printers, Water Corporation and Department of Sport and Recreation already involved.

Once again the major drawcard will be the Masters Mile on York Street on April 24.

Wilson said sports needed to itemise the details of their event information for the program now being drafted.

One of the sports to attract the biggest number of competitors is rowing with more than 60 participants expected from Albany and Perth clubs.

The regatta is held over 600 metres on the Kalgan River with events ranging from sculling to sweep oar races.

Albany Rowing Club president Tim Newbold said one of the highlights for masters was the mixed male and female events.

These were usually held in double and quad sculls.

“Rowers will be preparing for the Australian Masters to be held for the first time at Challenge Lakes in Armadale in June 2010,” Newbold said.

Many will be continuing from the World Masters held early this month in Sydney.

Albany Rowing Club member Viv Matts said the competition was very keen and she expected the same next year.

Matts was a member of the Australian teams which competed in the 1974, 1975 and 1977 World Rowing Champsionships.

She won a silver and two bronze medals in Sydney, competing against crews which contained many younger, former Australian team members.
